Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process, not something done to you

A lot of people imagine hypnotherapy as something that happens to them.

Maybe they picture someone taking control of their mind, or making them do something they would not normally do. And because of that, there can be hesitation, curiosity, or even a quiet fear around it.

The truth is very different.

Hypnotherapy is not something that is done to you. It is something you do, with support.

It is a collaborative process, where you remain in control and are actively involved in your own change throughout.

You are not a passive participant

One of the biggest misconceptions about hypnotherapy is that you simply lie back and something is "fixed" for you. In reality, you are anything but passive.

You are an active part of the process from beginning to end. Your thoughts, your imagination, your memories, your feelings, and your willingness to engage all play a role. Nothing happens without your mind allowing it to.

You cannot be made to do anything against your values or your will. Instead, hypnotherapy works with your natural ability to focus, imagine, and reflect.

A guided process, not a controlled one

My role as a hypnotherapist is not to take over your mind. It is to guide you into a deeply relaxed and focused state, where it becomes easier to access the part of you that already knows how to move forward.

Most people already have the capacity for change. They are not lacking something. It is more that stress, habits, emotions, or past experiences can make it harder to reach those inner resources. Hypnotherapy creates the space where those resources can be heard more clearly.

You already have what you need

A core part of my approach is the belief that people are not broken.

You do not need fixing. You are not something that needs to be repaired or rebuilt.

You already have inner resources, strengths, and qualities that can support change. This sits at the heart of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, which looks not at what is wrong, but at what is already working and what you want more of. Sometimes those strengths simply need space, attention, and the right conditions to come forward.

Hypnotherapy helps create those conditions.

What collaboration actually looks like in practice

In a session, collaboration might look like you setting the focus for what you want to work on, while I guide you into a relaxed and receptive state. Together we might gently explore patterns, thoughts, or feelings, with your mind responding in its own natural way. Any suggestions I offer are there to support the direction you want to move in, and you always return to full awareness and control at the end.

You are never "under" anything. You are simply deeply focused, safe, and supported.

Why this matters

When people understand hypnotherapy as collaboration, something often shifts before we have even begun.

Instead of feeling guarded or unsure, there is frequently a sense of relief.

Because it means you do not have to hand over control. You do not have to arrive already knowing how to change. You do not have to be "fixed" before you can begin.

You simply need to be open to exploring things in a different way.

Hypnotherapy is not something that happens to you. It is something you participate in, shape, and experience, with guidance alongside you. And often, the most powerful moment in the process is the realisation that the capacity for change was there all along. You simply needed the right space to access it.
