Finding Balance in a Fast Paced World

Updated: Aug 29, 2025

🍂 September Theme: Balance

As summer fades and we move toward autumn, the energy shifts. The days begin to shorten, the mornings cool, and nature whispers the reminder of balance: equal day and night, light and dark.

September carries this invitation to find balance within ourselves too: between giving and receiving, doing and being, showing up for others and pausing for our own care.

When Life Tips Out of Balance

For me, imbalance often comes unannounced. Like a slow-moving boulder, it gathers momentum until suddenly it feels unstoppable. It shows up in the way I give endlessly to others, leaving no space for myself to receive.

When life tips out of balance, everything feels heightened. My body sends signals through pain and restlessness, my mind speeds with anxious thoughts like a persistent drum, and my emotions swing like a rollercoaster. Sleep becomes inconsistent, procrastination creeps in, and I find myself distracted from the things that would bring the most joy.

I’ve learned to recognise these cues as invitations to slow down. To re-centre. To listen.

Balance and the Seasons

While I love the fullness of summer, I always notice a natural shift in September. After weeks of doing, entertaining, and filling every sunlit hour, my body exhales. It begins to ask for less; less busyness, less noise, more nourishment, more rest.

Just as the Equinox brings equal light and dark, my body reminds me to balance activity with stillness. To prepare gently for the slower, more reflective seasons ahead.

Balance Between Giving and Receiving

Many of us find it easier to give than to receive. Yet I’ve learned that I cannot truly give quality support if I haven’t rested, if I haven’t allowed myself to receive care, stillness, or replenishment.

Some of my deepest lessons about receiving came not by choice, but by necessity; times when I had no option but to pause. Looking back, I can see how those pauses expanded my capacity to serve others with more depth and presence.

When we allow ourselves to receive, we give more sustainably.

Balance Between Doing and Being

Doing keeps us moving. Being roots us in presence.

For me, being is as simple as noticing: the spider slowly crossing the carpet, the flowers swaying outside the window, the rhythm of my own breath. These small acts of presence soften my energy. They remind me that balance isn’t always found in big shifts, but in moments of stillness that bring me back to myself.

Gentle Steps Toward Balance

If life feels overwhelming, balance doesn’t require a dramatic overhaul. It begins with small choices.

✨ Try saying no to something that brings you no joy.

✨ Pause to notice your breath, and the way your body breathes itself.

✨ Remember that balance is not perfection. It is ongoing adjustment, a continual shifting and moving, a dance rather than a destination.

When we rest, when we slow down, we don’t withdraw love or care from others. We restore ourselves so that our giving is wholehearted rather than half-hearted.

The Ripple Effect of Balance

When we find balance within ourselves, it ripples outward. Our families, friends, and communities feel the steadiness of our energy. Our calm presence offers a sanctuary for others to rest into.

Balance, then, is not just personal wellbeing, it is collective wellbeing. By tending to ourselves, we create the conditions for healthier, more compassionate relationships and communities.

As we move into September, I invite you to notice: where do you feel out of balance? Where are you being called to slow down, to receive, or simply to be?

Because balance is not selfish. Balance is how we show up more fully; for ourselves, and for each other.

“Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.”— Thomas Merton
